History Of The Cameos

The cameos is a low relief handmade engraves sculpture, with this word we refer to the kind of processing and not the material used.
However we mostly use shells for this kind of work due to the possibility to creare many cromatic differences thanks to their layers. The most used are the carnelian of a reddish color, and the sardonic of a dark brown color.
Le più usate sono la Corniola di colore rossastro, e la Sardonica di colore marrone scuro.
The First ones to use the beaty of these artworks as jewels and ornaments were the greeks in 4000 a.C. followed by the romans.
The main subject of these artwork were god or portraits.  The cammeos reached their succes in the 300's, when they were needed to portray noble inns.  In the fifteenth century, artists changed the themes of their engravings and cameos regained their decorative function to embellish jewels such as rings, brooches and medallions.
During the course of the following centuries the art of the cameo was never forgotten but evolved. Although portraits are still the most popular subjects to this day, historical themes, mythological scenes, reproductions of works of art, floral scenes and much more are also represented.
Thanks to this technique, the engravers can create everything they can imagine. In italy, more precisely in Naples, is located the only Cammeso production center, exported in every market in the world that has always been in love with italian art.
